THIS JOYFUL EASTERTIDE
Today we begin to keep the great fifty days of Eastertide - fifty days - leading to the great Feast of Pentecost - when we rejoice in Our Lord's victory over sin and death, and in the new life which he brings to us in the 'Easter Sacrament' of Baptism. This is the oldest and the longest of the seasons within the Church's Year, a time of joy and celebration. The Easter word 'Alleluia' is frequently on our lips, and each Mass has a particular resonance in view of those Easter meals which the risen Christ ate with his disciples.
This time last year - on Easter Tuesday to be precise - work was just beginning on the re-flooring of the Chancel. Dust and chaos were about to take over, and the traditional Easter flowers were minimal. I rather felt that we had been deprived of Eastertide! It is very different this year - we can enjoy the re-ordered Sanctuary (and the flowers!) to the full. I hope that this will be a season of true joy and hope for us all.
