Joy to thee, O Queen of Heaven, Alleluia!

He whom thou wast meet to bear, Alleluia!

As he promised, hath arisen, Alleluia!

Pour for us to him thy prayer, Alleluia!

V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia!

R. For the Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Let us pray.

O God, who by the resurrection of thy Son, Jesus Christ, hast vouchsafed to bring joy to the whole world, grant we beseech thee, that aided by the prayers of his Mother the Virgin Mary, we too may be brought to the joys of eternal life. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

THIS JOYFUL EASTERTIDE

Today we begin to keep the great fifty days of Eastertide - fifty days - leading to the great Feast of Pentecost - when we rejoice in Our Lord's victory over sin and death, and in the new life which he brings to us in the 'Easter Sacrament' of Baptism. This is the oldest and the longest of the seasons within the Church's Year, a time of joy and celebration. The Easter word 'Alleluia' is frequently on our lips, and each Mass has a particular resonance in view of those Easter meals which the risen Christ ate with his disciples.

This time last year - on Easter Tuesday to be precise - work was just beginning on the re-flooring of the Chancel. Dust and chaos were about to take over, and the traditional Easter flowers were minimal. I rather felt that we had been deprived of Eastertide! It is very different this year - we can enjoy the re-ordered Sanctuary (and the flowers!) to the full. I hope that this will be a season of true joy and hope for us all.
